TOSLINK: "CONSUMER OPTICAL FIBRE"
TOSLINK (or optical digital) inputs and outputs are found
on the back of most consumer AV equipment such as
CD players, DVD players, and AV receivers. They allow
the transport of high bit-rate digital audio (including
multi-channel audio) over a single lead. Although utilizing
an identical digital signal as S/PDIF coaxial digital
connections, TOSLINK uses light instead of electricity
making it inherently impervious to EMI.
Often referred to as “fibre optic” cable, it is more accurately
called TOSLINK (from Toshiba Link), setting it apart from
other optic fibre technologies and connections—most
notably “fibre patch leads” which are commonly used
in high-speed computer networking infrastructure, TV
broadcast equipment and telecommunications, and which
use vastly different connectors.
