WELCOME
The electronics industry always moves fast and is certainly not forgiving.
2015 raised the bar. Retail heavy weights tumbled, technological change
gained pace and traditional markets were tossed to the wayside. We at
Radio Parts were perhaps fortunate in reading the market and thanks to you
guys, enjoyed another great year.
For many years, retail dinosaurs and smarty internet businessmen have
argued about the future of our industry. Who will prevail? While savvy
internet vendors have capitalised on free publicity, it was a non-event. There
is and always will be convergence. We need to develop the web to support
our bricks and mortar businesses. In 2015 the market crucified Dick Smith
for selling only 8% of product on the web, highlighting the importance of
offering your customers all options. So understanding this, our major
changes in 2015 were the new showroom and piles of web content.
The first few months of the year were spent building our new showroom.
I've been asked on many occasions, why invest in a showroom? It's a costly
exercise in a competitive market. While this is true, there are two reasons.
First, we need low ongoing running costs. So while there is a large initial
investment, the new layout has low ongoing costs. So natural light, polished
concrete, LED lighting and more efficient shelving. The second reason is that
we had no choice. We needed to remove asbestos, old electrical wiring and
data and install displays that could efficiently explain an increasing complex
story. Over the life of the showroom, it will become a very useful tool for the
sales guys and Radio Parts clients.
The second aspect mentioned above is web content. Now every training
session is uploaded to YouTube. Hundreds of product reviews are uploaded.
The Radio Parts website saw weights added to every product. When fully
complete, this will allow a simple and universal freight system, where you
can tell the exact cost of an order. The accuracy of an order will also be cross
checked by its weight. Social media like Facebook is more heavily used to
communicate deals, changes and industry news. We'll see this continue
into 2016 with a more simple check out process. The paperless office will
also be finally rolled out to you guys in the form of electronic invoices and
statements.
The final aspect of my yearly rant involves product changes in 2015. When
it comes to product, we have seen a leap towards IP web-based technology.
It seems that every product uses data cabling or Wi-Fi with a big focus on
multiroom. The mass-market for CCTV cameras moved to IP in 2015. The
TV channels (FreeviewPlus) started streaming over the web and offering
on-demand services. The 20 year Foxtel reign was also challenged by web-
based rivals, Netflix, Stan and Presto. On top of this, cloud services were
increasingly used, making the internet truly ubiquitous.
So 2016? We're just looking forward to showing you more fun technology.
