SIGNAL TO
THE COMMS ROOM
Here we have a building that contains
residencies with Free to Air (FTA) only and a
hotel that contains both Satellite Pay TV and
FTA. The hotel's SMATV system is constructed
using a Spaun 5-Wire system.
FROMTHE ROOF
You'll have normally a UHF antenna (say a
UPA4) and a VHF antenna (V310 is common).
If you're working with Foxtel satellite, you'll
have the dish (01001080), LNB (01002050)
and mount (00906005)—all Foxtel approved.
The FTA will be combined using a diplexer
or triplexer (00763347) and fed into a Spaun
distribution amp (00760598).
Calculating losses: We start with 85dB-90dB
from the satellite dish. Using 6dB or 10dB
attenuators (CAT10FA), it can be dropped to
75dB, where the signal is fed into a Spaun
Launch Amplifier (00761522). If there is a
significant amount of loss over this cable
run, you might need to use slope equalisers
(LE862F).
FROM THE COMMS ROOM
UP THE BACKBONE:
LOSSES
In this scenario, the signal is fed up a series
of taps. On the top floor we have a splitter.
The loss between the tap and the multiswitch
on each floor is around 10-13dB, while the
loss between one tap to the next tap on the
floor above is around 1dB. The losses on a
splitter (VTS525) is different. For this splitter,
we might see a 5dB loss in all directions. It's
recommended to keep signal between 58dB
to 76dB.
IN-ROOMCONNECTION
From the multiswitch, 2 runs of RG6 will go to
each TV point, where a diplexer will separate
the FTA and satellite signal to a triple wallplate.
WARNING: This cheat sheet is a guide
to the basics of SMATV. Before quoting

When it comes to larger projects,
we look for the industry's best. For
intercom systems, most agree it's
Aiphone. For PA systems, you have
Toa. For SMATV, we recommend
Spaun.
Spaun specialise in high-end
commercial and satellite TV systems.
They are German made, 98% in-house
production and R&D, 5 year warranty
and arguably the fastest system to
install, so less labour cost. For the big
commercial jobs, you'll find Spaun
product approval numbers on the
Foxtel IPL.
